Whether you are contemplating a career change, just discovering you want to teach, or looking to fulfill a lifelong dream – New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey (NPTNJ) could be the way you get there. The program provides a process for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) to become licensed teachers without having to complete a traditional teacher training program. The NPTNJ program is regulated and approved by the NJ Department of Education (DOE). The courses are graduate level, and the program can be taken for credit or non-credit.are graduate level, and the program can be taken for credit or non-credit.

You also need your Certificate of Eligibility (CE) before registering for Semester 1. Starting January 2021, candidates must have a contract teaching position to begin Semester 1.
Candidates will submit all of the appropriate documentation to the NJ Department of Education (DOE) demonstrating that the requirements have been met to obtain the Certificate of Eligibility (CE). The CE will allow the candidate to immediately seek employment as a Teacher in a public, private, or parochial school. The requirements are as follows:
- Official College transcripts indicating a Bachelor’s Degree
- The Praxis II test
- The Core Academic Skills test
- GPA 3.0
- If you graduated with a Bachelor’s degree prior to September 1, 2016 your grade point average must be a 2.75.
- If you graduated with a Bachelor’s degree after September 1, 2016 your grade point average must be a 3.0
Once your DOE online application has been processed you may check the status of your application by choosing “CHECK APPLICATION STATUS” on the DOE website.
